Mayan Sailing 3.1
MAYAN is a distinctive and elegant John Alden designed centerboard schooner built in Honduras in 1947 and rebuilt by the master shipwright Wayne Ettel in 2005.
The rebuild involved the replacement of approximately 75% of the hull frames, all of the deck beams and the hull planking from the keel to the shear. The original construction was traditional single layer carvel planking caulked with cotton while the rebuild incorporated epoxy glue double planking with kapur wood below the waterline and Douglas fir over Port Oxford cedar above the waterline.
Her owner, David Crosby, has maintained her to the very highest standards.

Accommodations
The Mayan’s accommodations are very traditional in layout. As one enters the main saloon there is a large double berth/settee to port, a smaller single settee to starboard. New electronics are mounted just at the foot of the entry on the starboard side. The galley is located on the port side forward of the double settee. As one continues forward, a nice double bunk is on the starboard side. An enclosed head is forward of the galley. The Master cabin is on the starboard side accessible from the main saloon. Forward of this cabin another double cabin is accessible from the forward passage towards the bow. The bow area is both a sail storage and the main chandlery for the yacht.

Galley
A large top loading refrigerator and separate freezer are on the left of the galley. The double sink is on the port side, and the four-burner propane stove is near the centerline and forward of the sink. Lots of storage space is outboard of the galley for pots and pans and cooking utensils. Large dry storage cabinets are amidships over the centerboard trunk space in the galley space.

Electronics
Mayan has totally new installations of all major electronics. This work has been done in 2007 and 2008.

Rebuild
The Mayan was extensively rebuilt in 2005 and 2006 by Wayne Ettel in Wilmington Harbor, CA. During the rebuild all planking was replaced and more than 70% of the frames. Frames were double sawn of purpleheart to match the original lines of the boat. Planking was with double planked Kapur below the waterline and Douglass-fir over Port Oreford cedar on the topsides. Both layers are sandwiching a thick layer of epoxy. The topsides are “bottle” smooth and extremely fair. The teak decks were re-laid in a modern fashion using 3M5200 as a gasket between sprung planks edge fastened with silicon bronze fasteners. A routed groove is filled with standard modern teak deck caulk. NO LEAKS!! The inside of the hull below the waterline is fully epoxy saturated to prevent rot intrusion.

Mechanical
There is a separate hatch on the port side of the cabin top that allows entry into the engine room of the Mayan. This area is fully lit and contains most of the mechanical equipment for the sailing vessel. The main engine is a 100 HP Mercedes Diesel, fresh water cooled. with a feathering prop.

The Auxiliary engine is a Fresh Water Cooled Yanmar 2GM. The auxiliary engine has two alternators, runs the refrigeration system, the water maker, and fire-pump mechanical bilge pump for emergency back-up.
Deck and Sails
Mayan’s Deck layout is Classic Alden. The large cockpit has a helm which is a traditional spoked wheel using a massive double screw direct geared drive on the rudder post. The custom binnacle has been rebuilt by Wayne Ettel during the refit. The Main is controlled aft of the helm. The Mizzen Staysail has a club foot and hoists on the mainmast. The total Sail Area is 1665 Sq. Ft. There are two jibs, a club footed jib and a Yankee. There are two fishermans of different weight and size to accommodate both light air sailing and fresher breezes. The boat is equipped with spinnaker gear and has two different sized spinnakers. The lightest of the spinnakers still pulls the boat like a train even in light air.

The centerboard is raised and lowered by a wire reel windlass on the cabin top.
