“Glenn Geary” – 75′ Newbert & Wallace Sardine Carrier – 1948 – $150,000
GLENN GEARY is one of the last of the classic sardine carriers. She is based on a traditional model of sardine carrier of which few remain today. GLENN GEARY was built by the reputable Newbert & Wallace shipyard in Thomaston, Maine in 1948. Double ended sardine carriers such as GLENN GEARY, built by Newbert & Wallace, are known for their stunning good looks, excellent craftsmanship, superb sea-keeping abilities and reliability as a “good little work boat.” This well known sardine carrier worked the waters of coastal Maine under her original name – JOYCE MARIE. She was built for the famous Stinson Cannery, a herring packing company located in Maine. GLENN GEARY is currently documented and registered as a fishing vessel and was still working up until September of 2007 when her herring career ended. She has since been cleaned out, cleaned up, and refitted at the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in 2008. Construction & Layout Details TYPE & LAYOUT: GLENN GEARY is a sardine carrier, heavily constructed with a flush main deck and pilot house stacked aft on a raised trunk over the engine room. The layout from the bow below deck is as follows: foc’sle/forward fish hold; aft fish hold; engine room; common lazarette. HULL: The hull is constructed of carvel hard pine planking over double-sawn white oak frames – sided approximately 8″ x 6″ and set 16″ on center. Sections of sawn frames are through-bolted with galvanized bolts. She was constructed with a raked stern, round chine and a rounded transom to an aft stern. MAIN DECK: Constructed of painted planking. The fish hold hatch is on a 6″ combing and is a combined hatch for both fish holds. An aluminum ‘dog house’ provides entrance to the foc’sle with an escape on the foredeck of the foc’sle. The pilot house is located aft on an aluminum trunk. The pilot house is constructed of plywood over wood frames. A watertight deckplate is mounted on the deck forward of the pilot house trunk. Bulwarks are relieved both port and starboard between stanchions for the purpose of shedding water from the deck. Steel mooring bits are attached up forward as well as aft – at the port and starboard stern quarters. Tie offs and cleats are located on the inside of the bulwarks both port and starboard. PILOT HOUSE: The pilot house is entered through port and starboard doors with diamond plate steps. Three drop windows are located forward. Port and starboard windows are located in the both of the side doors. While framing is exposed in the overheads, plywood sheathing covers the framing throughout the house. The pilot house is divided into two areas: the main helm forward and the skipper’s stateroom aft. The skipper’s stateroom has access to the engine room. FOC’SLE: As stated earlier, the foc’sle is entered through an aluminum ‘dog house.’ A ladder with non-skid treads and hand grabs makes access easier. Two bunks are located to port and benches are located both port and starboard. A small stove in the foc’sle could be used to heat the space. A galley is located just aft with a folding table and a pantry to starboard. |
Machinery The engine room is entered through a companionway at the aft end of the pilot house over a 24′ threshold. An aluminum ladder with diamond plates is available for ease of entry. There is one berth. The engine room continues on to the lazarette. The main engine is located at the centerline of the room while fuel tanks are located forward to both port and starboard. The main engine is a Detroit Diesel, model 12V-71. This is a V12, electrically started, naturally aspirated which produces approximately 350 HP. It is heat exchanger cooled, exhaust is a dry stack. There is a Racor fuel separator and the engine drives a 32V alternator and a 12V alternator. The aft end of the main engine is a twin disc reverse/reduction gear and the forward end is a power takeoff. AUXILIARY GENERATOR: In the port area of the engine room is a Lister, model ST2A which is an electrically started, air cooled diesel engine producing 14 HP with two cylinders. Start is either electric or manual and the exhaust is dry stack. There is a separate battery for cranking which drives two 12V alternators as well as being equipped with a 6-sheave pulley on the forward end of the engine. DECK MACHINERY: GLENN GEARY is equipped with a hydraulically operated horizontal winch head at the base of the main mast as well as a hydraulically operated hoist with stainless steel whip at the main mast. |
Spars & Rigging An 8″ steel pipe mast is stepped at main deck level. There are two stays forward as well as two port and starboard shrouds with ratlines. A single 3″ boom is stepped to the main mast, constructed of steel pipe and equipped with a braided nylon topping lift. |
Electrical Circuits and Electronics The main bank of batteries consists of two heavy duty deep cycle 12Vs and a single heavy duty deep cycle 8V for a 32V bank in the engine room. An emergency pilot house battery is also available as well as an extra deep cycle 12V battery on the starboard side of the engine room. 12 and 32V panels are located in the pilot house.

Pumps There is a manual piston-style pump in the foc’sle. The main engine drives a Jabsco pump with a manual clutch. A single cylinder gasoline-driven pump is located in the pilot house. |
Ground Tackle A folding fisherman’s style anchor is located at the main deck level with a short section of 7/8″ twisted nylon anchor rode. |
