This boat is a traditional gaff sloop day sailor, and is the big sister to the well-known Concordia Sloop Boat designed by Pete Culler. Hull construction, though appearing traditional with oak frames, is by modern glued lapstrake. The hull is tight and structurally stable, with no seams or leakage. The boat is in excellent condition. Cockpit coamings are varnished mahogany, cockpit benches and floor boards teak, the deck is traditional laid teak, and spars are varnished spruce. The hull design is keel/centerboard with outside lead ballast at 710 pounds. Displacement is 2200 lbs. Sails are white dacron, in excellent condition, and boat has a full forest green cockpit cover and a new canvas winter cover. She is fully equipped with forest green seat cushions, a self tending jib, bilge pumps, and a Torquedo electric motor. The trailer is by Triad, and is equipped with surge brakes and easy load/launch features of keel guides and tongue extension, and has been fully re-furbished including a new axel and lighting. Anchovy has been well taken care of and stored seasonally indoors by a builder of classic wooden boats located in Me. She is ready for the 2012 season.

A cloak of mystery shrouds much of the history of this grand old lady and unravelling it has been a fascinating task. Undoubtedly she is a very old, Scandinavian with royal connections. For years she has traveled the Mediterranean sea and is currently taking her rest there. Vesta, a beautiful classic yacht, is believed to have been built to a design by Colin Archer, certainly in 1892 in the Lautrup yacht yard in Copenhagen, has been totally restored and refiitted in what is believed to be as near her original condition as is known. Her graceful lines and striking appearance always attract attention wherever she goes.

Original drawings have been discovered with her original cutter rig, modified at some time in her history but now restored to its original glory restoring the grace and balance that proper rigging bestows. Her anchor winch is believed to be original and has been restored and upgraded as has the hull and all her machinery. Her hull is of oak which has worn amazingly well over the past century keeping its integrity against all odds.

Her interior is however new with a more guest friendly layout with two spacious cabins each with a good sized shower/ wc, an improvement on the original design with four very small cabins which shared facilities. We hope that these changes are seen as sympathetic and we feel they are still in keeping with the yacht but take into account the modern needs of guests.

She now offers two attractive cabins with en suite facilities plus crew quarters for two, a very attractive salon area adjoined by the newly fitted galley. A good sized chart table remains in the salon, with space the modern navigation station instrumentation to be added.

All who visit Vesta leave with a feeling for the history of the yacht as well as the quality of workmanship as well as of the materials used, which have weathered so well and left such a legacy.

She was built for the King of Denmark and was the flag ship of the Royal Danish yacht club until the mid 1960′s. Her royal connection was further established by the silver plaques she used to have in her salon from many eminent royal family members. Her design is believed to have been by Colin Archer.

Built of Oak, her hull shows little sign of the hundred and more years she has been at sea.

During her career she has won a number of races testifying to her great design and balance.

Accommodations
Beginning forward, you’ll find a spacious V-berth with two port lights, reading lamps, cedar lined hanging locker, storage under berth, Sens Monitor , changing settee with storage above, stereo speakers, abundant lighting and privacy door. Next aft and to port is the head with separate stall shower, black granite basin top, fresh water head. Take a minute al look close at the photos of the V Berth photo and head. The Roll and Tip paint work in this boat is a work of art. Notice the finish on the varnish, the new s/s port lights and LED lighting, not to mention the custom embroidery. One should also note that in the three staterooms on each bunk there is a custom bed role with sheet and blanket for that berth.Continuing aft from the forward head and to starboard there is a stand up Dometic refrigeration unit and galley. The Galley features a black granite counter top, two-burner propane stove and oven, microwave oven, hot water, opening port light and coffee maker. The galley photo again illustrates how well this boat shows, not the reflection on the galleys bulkhead. Across and to port is a stateroom with upper and lower berths, port light, storage and privacy door.Next aft and up three steps is the main salon. To port is the stand up navigation station that offers a 360 view, large chart table, Icom VHF 504, Raymarine Chart Plotter and Radar display C-120 and Raymarine 6002 autopilot. All counter tops are black granite with high gloss wood trim. Note the salon photo looking forward to understand the openness and 360 view. Just aft is the all new electric panel, please refer to the electric panel photo because I would need to use more than a thousands words to explain how simple and well done the electric system has been put together. To starboard is the wine locker, forward of the wine locker is a trash receptacle and in the next door forward is a freezer. On top of this counter top is the entertainment center which features an MP3 connection, sound amplifier. Continuing aft are two chairs with storage behind them, across and to port is a straight setee. To starboard is the entrance to the custom aft stateroom. Referred to has the Pirates Den, the owner felt this would be a perfect sport for his grandkids to stay when they where onboard. The Den features its own head, sink and large center lined double berth. From the salon and up to steps through the companionway is the cockpit. Again look at the cockpit photos, is that inviting our what? Please note the custom cockpit table, (4) Harkin S/T Winches, beverage holders and canopy sunshade. While looking at the forward facing cockpit photo please notice on the cabin top where a custom salon hatch was added. The mast has been repainted, standing rigging and running rigging has been replaced. Moving forward to the bow you will notice the dinghy and custom racks, all new anchoring system and roller furling system for the headsail.

Now if you are still following me here you will need to step off the boat and walk around her twice. She will start talking to you and because you where the first to view this fine gem you will have the first opportunity to own her.

If that was enough, I forgot to mention to you this yacht will cruise under power at 8 knots. Raise the main and you will motor sail at 10 and 11 knots. Now look over the last 50 years of offshore race results and every time you see a Calkins 50 they finished at the top of their class.

Deck & Hull
Built in 1960 by Jerry Driscoll Custom Yachts in San Diego, CA, CATHLEEN is strip planked with mahogany over oak ribs. She has a long waterline, raised salon, flat foredeck and canoe stern. Generous freeboard enhances her seaworthiness and keeps the crew dry on blustery days and at the same time allows for good tankage and load carrying characteristics. Her deck is fiberglass over marine plywood, and all fasteners are bronze with glued joints. 33 Sister ribs have been to secure the stiffness. The hull is painted white with gold cove and boot stripes. The coach top and cockpit coamings as well as the mahogany toe rail are finished bright. There are eight new stainless steal port lights in the hull sides, a large opening hatch in the foredeck and cabin top. The salon has windows on all sides and extends aft from the mast, opening onto the cockpit through large cockpit doors. The 12 foot cockpit is spacious with plenty of room for an evening of alfresco dining around the ultra custom removable mahogany cockpit table.Electric WindlessPlow Anchor with Chain and Rode

Hypnotically beautiful" is how Phil Bolger described L. Francis Herreshoff's legendary Rozinante. He also noted her "thoroughbred manners;" she sails as well as she looks. This example of the celebrated canoe yawl was built for the designer himself, and is thoroughly authentic, down to the small details. Constructed by the respected Lie-Nielsen yard in Rockland, Maine, she has been well cared-for by a succession of owners. A wonderful daysailer, this extremely simple boat is also surprisingly commodious for a single-hander or a couple who enjoy coastal cruising. The current owner offers this boat with much regret.

Ganbare, the famous one tonner of Doug Peterson is an unforgettable milestone of the yachting history : Like America and Dorade ,Ganbare of 1973 changed the yacht design, and since then the racing yachts (but also the cruisers) took inspiration from her hull. It is a very simple and small boat built on budget, but her easy lines, and her light and strong construction marked the step. Winning the One Ton Cup of 1973 against the S&S and Carter’s masterpieces, she was admired by every yachtsman and designer. Since that race, Ganbare won in Mediterranean sea an extraordinary number of races both in her level class and in handicap races. Perfectly , I should say maniacally restored, she is more perfect than ever in her life ,and she is for sale for half the cost of her refit.

History
In the early 70’s the young and brilliant engineer Doug Peterson of San Diego , skilled sailor and racing yachtsman, works in the yacht design office of Skip Calkins, traditionally linked to Nat Herreshoff and Nik Potter great designing school. Tanks to the many victories with “Legend” a yacht designed by Calkins and inspired to Herreshoff experiences , he elaborated the ideas of a lighter displacement level class , with short overhangs and long floating line . He dedicated long time to the study of the led keel and rudder blade and to a strong and easy building. Peterson at the age of 28 builds on budget his first racer with the plan of taking part to the American selection for the One Ton Cup. Ganbare was built in the shipyard of Carl Eichenlaub , famous for building the best Star racers. The limited budget allowed only 4 winches .The boat looked a lot smaller than the other one tonners, but the real difference is in the hull design . She won the selections and was shipped to Italy to take part to the One Ton Cup at that time the display window of the best racers in the world. Unfortunately the crew misunderstand the race instructions in the long race and Ganbare collected a DNF .She won all the other 5 races of the race week, but it was not be enough to win the Cup, that will be wined by Admiral Tino Straulino on Hydra a Dick Carter design . Straulino however has always declared that Ganbare was the real winner and the fastest boat.Olin Stephens, who followed the races on a motor launch had to admit: “I never saw a boat that impressed me more”. Ganbare was sold immediately after the Cup to a famous Italian yachtsman who kept on winning every race for long time. Doug Peterson returned home with the order of 5 new designs!

In 1982 , 10 years after designing Ganbare, Peterson was the greatest yachtdesigner of the world and declared that all his boats are fruit of study and evolution. With Ganbare everything had been different. It was fruit of an intuition , a revelation that can happen once in a a designer’s life-Petrson declared. In 1999, after 26 years of top performances and rating penalizations, Ganbare won the Niulargue race in St. Tropez among hundreds of modern and updated yachts.

Her carefully ,philological and conservative restoration was carried on by Cantiere Pezzini in Viareggio, Italy in about 15 months. The outstanding yacht was re-launched on September 9 2007 .

The owner, more an art collector than a racing yachtsman showed Ganbare very few times in classic yacht races , but as soon as she was launched, she won the Vele Storiche Viareggio in her class and received the Mopi Trophy for the widest and detailed documentation of her restoration .

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

One of the most striking features of this vessel is that it was built in 1910 and yet -here it is -this fair and undistorted hull. Granted, it didn’t hurt to be designed and built by the legendary George Lawley and, more recently in the 1980’s, almost totally rebuilt at the Gannon and Benjamin yard in Martha’s Vineyard - now one of the premier wooden boatyards anywhere in the world so, right off the bat, we have a vessel of impeccable pedigree. To have this same vessel built today fully fitted out would easily cost in the realm of $550-600,000.

Description and Specifications
HULL COMPOSITION & STRUCTURE HULL MATERIAL

Old growth long-leaf yellow pine – much of the hull planking was replaced in the early 1980’s but much of it was also retained because the quality of the wood of that era was exceptional by every standard compared to almost anything obtainable today. It is very difficult to acquire the quality of wood of the same type, i.e. long-leaf yellow pine (or, as the British call it, pitch pine) today

KEEL

Original oak back-bone – again, oak of this seasoned quality is almost unobtainable today Originally there was a lead ballast keel with some lead ballast trim in the bilges – this movable ballast was melted down and re-cast into the existing external ballast, thereby creating a more stable and ultimately safer vessel (this was all done during the re-build in the ‘80’s)

BALLAST

Lead

FRAMES

All the frames were replaced in the 1980’s – most of them were double-layered steam-bent white oak and some, particularly in the bow sections, were sawn frames of various exotic hardwoods such as Angelique (exceptionally strong) It should be noted here that these frames were installed with considerable expertise – a solution of turpentine, pine tar and linseed oil was used – is a tried and true traditional concoction which has been used for hundreds of years quite successfully to preserve wooden vessels, particularly inside – this vessel is a testimony to its effectiveness as the interior of the vessel appeared virtually new

FASTENINGS

SS #18-8 used in re-build – six of these were drawn from varying areas and were found to be in absolutely exceptional “like new” condition
